What is the annual Wyoming Regional Science Bowl?
It’s fast! It’s fun! It’s an academic tournament that challenges high school students’ knowledge of science in a daylong, round robin elimination competition between teams representing Wyoming high schools. Students have 5 seconds to correctly answer questions on earth science, math, general science, astronomy, chemistry, physics, biology, and computer science once they have buzzed in or the question is forfeited to the opposing team. All students receive a Science Bowl t-shirt and welcome bag, and have the opportunity to meet others from across the state with interests similar to their own. Prizes are awarded to the first, second, and third place teams and schools, as well as to the team receiving the Civility Award, as designated by their fellow competitors.
The Wyoming Regional Science Bowl competition is open to any Wyoming high school wishing to participate. Teams are composed of five students (four team players plus an alternate) and one coach. The coach can be a teacher, parent, or community volunteer.
The 2008 Wyoming Regional Science Bowl was held on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Frontier Middle School in Casper. The winning Regional Science Bowl team, Star Valley High School, received an expense-paid trip to go on to compete at the National Science Bowl, held May 1-6, 2008, at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland, outside of Washington D.C.

History of the Wyoming Regional Science Bowl
The Wyoming Regional Science Bowl is sponsored by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the Rocky Mountain Oilfield Testing Center (RMOTC). The first Wyoming Regional Science Bowl was held in 1999, and has grown to include new Wyoming high schools almost every year. Several of the participating high schools have sent more than one team to this regional competition. Visit the winners archive to see past teams that have won and gone on to represent Wyoming high schools in the National Science Bowl in Washington DC.
Representatives from the DOE and RMOTC are available to work with high school teams and coaches to prepare for Science Bowl competition. Registration online, sample practice questions, the all-important rules of the game, and recommended team strategies are available to coaches, prior to the event, at the National Science Bowl website.
National Science Bowl
Dedicated to science education and securing a scientific workforce, the US Department of Energy developed the National Science Bowl in 1991 to encourage high school students throughout the United States to excel in math and science, and to pursue careers in those fields. The competition offers students and the teachers who prepare them a forum to receive national recognition for their talent and hard work. The National Science Bowl is held in Washington DC, and provides an unforgettable experience for students as they tour the Capitol, attend seminars on the latest scientific developments presented by industry and research centers, and compete with students from across the country.
